Bystander, NY was the kind of place that people only found by accident after making a few wrong turns on their way to someplace more important. There were no highways or major thoroughfares, just a few crooked roads that eventually led down to the village square. It looked like a place that time forgot; with Tarlick's General , a non-denominational church, the grange, a local bar called the Beer & Jeer, the volunteer fire station and an old brick horse trough planted with annual flowers being the only highlights of the town's center.

For a city-bred woman like Ellie Richardson, Bystander was the perfect place to start over after the death of her husband. Self-discovery paves the way for a little romance, a lot of healing and business success in her newly adopted small town. Unfortunately, the calm of small town living will be shattered when terrorist attacks force everyone to rely upon each other for day-to-day survival.

I read the first three books of this series and I loved them! I really enjoyed this take on an apocalyptic story--specifically, the perspective. The book is about what Ellie had to learn to do during the end of the world, and not the actual destruction of the world.

This book follows the many trials and tribulations of Ellie Richardson. She's a walking "manual" from the city. She knows a lot about homesteading from books and TV shows, but never had an opportunity to apply her knowledge in real world situations until the apocalypse. The book is told from her perspective, so often times, you will find yourself caught up in her thoughts about the different animals that need tending to, seeds to plant, fashion, glam, movies, etc. I almost feel sorry for the townspeople who have to deal with her, but the sarcastic conversations are hilarious. Ellie definitely has a "can-do" attitude, but it takes her a while before she can do anything.

Most books about the apocalypse talk about religion at some point. This book is the same in that respect, however, it differs in that it talks about some of the challenges of holding onto faith as well as pointing to some of the irony of faith during an apocalypse.

Of course, during the end of the world, there needs to be a love story. I'm not a huge fan of romance, but this one is actually pretty good!

Bystander eBook Carolyn EvansDean Reviews

While some of the book was quite enjoyable (homesteading tips), I felt a little preached at (premarital sex, church). Wasn't bad, wasn't great.
Carolyn Evans-Dean's writing style lures you in and keeps you reading... I couldn't put the book down and have just purchased Christmas in Bystander so I could continue reading.... I am living this lifestyle myself and feel she provides great educational information for those learning to homestead and being prepared for the unexpected! Great book... Thanks Carolyn Evans-Dean! Blessings....
I really enjoyed this book. It was so easy to read and I enjoyed the change of perspective - you don't usually find TEOTWAWKI books from a female's point of view. It made important points about preparedness without whacking you over the head with them. Very readable, coherent story line - well worth the time and $$.
"Bystander" is not your average apocalypse story. The main character is female and not carrying an Uzi, yet somehow she manages to survive a societal event.
That she does this surrounded by genuinely likable people and without having to resort to cannibalism is a rare scenario in this genre.
This is the type of story that's lacking and needed- one that actually could happen. Thank you, Ms. Evans-Dean for this little gem in a sea of despair.
This book is a jewel, and a sweet little story that appeals to a whole host of readers. The author writes like she knows these people, these characters, and she shows a great flair for upsetting expectations. The book has a solid, moral core without being preachy and a timely message about communities working together to survive hard knocks. There is action, romance, and homesteading tips scattered through the tale, and I for one cannot wait for the sequel. This is a book to read and read again, and recommend to your friends.
Evans' casual style of writing is really fun, and while this is fiction, Bystander is also educational. We should all be asking ourselves the big "what if" questions posed by this book. I read the version over a span of three days and wished for more. Her characters come to life right away, including Bogart the dog. My only criticism is the lack of editing. Typos are distracting when one is engrossed in a story -- jerking you back to reality when you would really prefer to stay and play a while longer. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.
Bystander A Tale of The End of the World as SHE Knew It

I loved this book!!

Ella Richardson is my kind of heroine, a twenty-first century woman who is financially independent, successful, competent, capable, caring, interested in a romantic relationship, healthy, fit and beautiful - and not reluctant to reveal any of these attributes. In addition, she is a community minded individual, willing and eager to share her knowledge, skills and gifts with those in need. She is also the kind of woman who makes sure that you will be happy to have done business with her, the kind of person who constructs every transaction with a win-win mindset. If I had a daughter, I would want her to read this book and to embrace Ellie as a powerful, ethical and positive role model for this millennium.

This book was my very first "read" on my brand new Fire. Given the kind of heroine that Ellie is, it seems appropriate now that I was able to read her story on the latest digital reading technology; everything about Ellie herself is so very contemporary and of the moment.

Ellie's behavior represents the complete antithesis of the "me first" mentality that characterized the "greed-is good" qualities of recent years. Her "can do" attitude, her determination and resolve with respects to issues and problems, and her reaction to trying events is absolutely and completely refreshing. In many respects, she reminds me of Scarlett O'Hara, the heroine of "Gone with the Wind." Ellie is definitely a woman who can cope.

I liked all of the characters in this book so much that I could hardly wait to order the author's second Bystander book, which was just recently published.

Read and enjoy!!
