Twists that you did not expect!!
Book Two and it only gets better! With all its twists and turns, Asphodel will leave you guessing how it's all going to end, and this page-turner of a book should NOT be started before bed. You won't put it down. Jacobs keeps us guessing how the pieces of this massive puzzle all fit together and right up until the end, you won't be able to figure it out. And then the pieces all come together...and wow!
Another successful volume of the Muse Chronicles. Can't wait for book three!
... Haunting, clever, and entrancing are a few descriptors for this second installment in the Muse Chronicles. I strongly recommend "Rhapsody" before "Asphodel," as the latter can sometimes be difficult to track even with the previous novel in account. Even if I sometimes was a little lost in the revelations, relationships and rules of this universe, I always enjoyed the time I spent in it.
For newcomers, the Muse Chronicles world is founded in a cross section of Catholic, Ancient Greek, and Hindu sensibilities, being particularly heavy in none of these. The language is rich and imagination is expansive, and the intent is honest and innocent. For those who have read "Rhapsody" and are considering whether or not "Asphodel" might be worth it, be assured this second effort from Jacobs builds and improves on the first. The characters are more well rounded in this installment, and a few unresolved details assure us more is to come, while completing a satisfactory arc on its own.
If I were to complain about anything, it is that characters frequently withhold relevant details from their stories for the sake of dropping a plot twist. Some of these make sense, others are difficult to condone, but all can ultimately can be forgiven. I'm also a little salty about the end, but I might come around to it eventually.
For the cautious readers, there's virtually no foul language, a little eroticism without graphic detail, some violence but again not graphic, and many varieties of relationships are portrayed, including heterosexual, homosexual, and a trans gendered character who does not explicitly engage in any romantic relationship post transformation. The story, however, is not about gendered relationships so much as human relationships, and acknowledges that gender sometimes (but not always) can complicate those relationships. If any of this bothers you, please kindly refrain from intentionally enraging yourself.
Highly recommended to the literary reader who enjoys a long and hopeful journey, not overanxious to reach the end.
